He ran for mayor three times, even appearing with his boa and tiara at mayoral debates thankfully he wore pants. If you knew Leslie, you also knew he was serious about running for Mayor. He spoke about real issues and really wanted to make a difference. He didn't win of course, he came in second, garnering almost eight percent of the vote in He was mentioned in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, had a set of collectible refrigerator magnets you could change his clothes, including multi-colored boas , and an iPhone app.
He made money from all of those things and still he was homeless, sleeping out in the street far more than anywhere else even to the end. Whether Leslie helped the cause of curing homelessness or hurt it can be debated another time.

Spencer Nutting, an Austin filmmaker and sometime Uber driver, says the idea behind his film is to preserve Cochran's memory for a city which seems to have a mass turnover every five years. No one wants Cochran and his pink thongs to be forgotten. In the three years since Cochran's death Nutting has been collecting memories on videotape from people who encountered Cochran. He calls it all powerful stuff. Nutting says that an event in linked him and Cochran together for the rest of the life of Austin mainstay.

When a Bush debate rehearsal tape was leaked to the Al Gore campaign the city was up in arms. He gave some to Cochran and his homeless friends to sell and show off. Cochran just missed the massive "selfie" craze but would have no doubt obliged everyone he could. With a statue installed everyone could get a moment with him.
