Bruce Rogers, known to many as the "Orchid Whisperer", will entertain the combined societies of the Peninsula Orchid Society and the GGCS this month with stories of the medicinal orchids of Asia, species orchids which follow their own rules, and Ant Orchids.
Bruce has been growing, hybridizing and decorating with orchids for over 30 years. He began his professional career 30 years ago in the late 's when the City of Atlanta Parks Department hired him to work with it's orchids in the greenhouses in Piedmont Park. In the early 's he left to start Bruce Rogers Orchids, an orchid consulting and management based in San Francisco.
In , he joined Terry Root of the Orchid Zone and co-founded the Oz Gardens, a business devoted exclusively to hybridizing and growing Sobralias. Bruce's passion for orchids has made him one of the foremost authorities on orchid landscaping - the designing and creating of garden environments where orchids are integrated as a primary focus.
Scott is co-owner and manager of Barrita Orchids, an Australian commercial wholesale orchid growing business supplying quality potted plants to retail stores and nurseries as well as flowers and plants to markets around the world.
Barrita Orchids has a well-established reputation for its Cymbidiums with fifty years of operation and now one of the top hybridizers of Sarcochilus. Over more than two decades Scott has established a world class breeding program for varicosum oncidium varieties as well, gaining many awards and taking this style of Oncidinae to new heights.. I also noticed a gorgeous orchid, bollea coelestis, on the sale table that I had to restrain myself from buying. This week we attended the June meeting of the SF Orchid Society which meets in the county fair building near 9th and Lincoln. The activities begin at pm if you want to enter an orchid for judging, which only a few people do. However, many members bring in blooming specimens for the presentation table in front.
The meeting officially begins at pm with a few very knowledgeable people presenting the plants. These folks sound like auctioneers as they quickly rattle off the origin, breeding history, and other descriptive facts about the orchids. There were probably 50 to 60 plants so it takes awhile to get through them all. The vast variety and complicated naming scheme for orchids can seem like an impenetrable other-world. The guest speaker was James Rose from Cal-orchids Inc. He shared photographs of huge orchids growing on trees outside of his nursery.
