The cheese and sauce are out of this world! Saw all the 5 STAR ratings except for a about a third of the reviews stinkers and drove an hour and a half with traffic. Got there early, before 5pm, and got right in. Really not a pleasant smiling greeting, got a table immediately and about 10 minutes later got water and another 10 minutes for a glass of wine and antipasta dish. The antipasta was very good and a good portion. The meal I had was a large portion of veal with capers and lemon sauce and the veal was like shoe leather.
I had trouble chewing it, as did my wife. She ordered Sea Bass and it was so so, also a large portion. Didn't have any desert, because we were ready to just get gone as soon as possible. As far as ambiance; Not much. Just small inside and old. Appetizer, glass of wine and two places of inferior Italian foods. Not worth the money or the time to visit the city.
If you are going to travel any distance to get to his place, think twice. This was our third post-theater visit to Trattoria Contadina. The location is great, and the food is excellent. Imaginative Italian food. Great wine. Perfect al dente. A great neighborhood restaurant. Locally run and many long term employees.
Given its generally high rating, we went for dinner the other night and had a very disappointing meal. I asked the waiter about the popularity of the veal dish and he said it was a top dish and his very favorite, so we ordered it. The veal was very poor quality meat and not of a quality we could eat. There were also two slices of veal--each of which was to be prepared with a different sauce. The tomato sauce ran over both pieces and so they both tasted the same, which in addition to the poor quality of the veal were prepared with too much sage.
We finished the spaghetti side, but left the veal. We told the waiter and he said he was sorry because he loved the dish. The tiramisu for desert also did not have the richness that a quality one would have. We are confused about the popularity of this restaurant in such a discerning locale as SF. Is it a tourist restaurant? Loved this restaurant!! Everything was spectacular!!! Thank you! The ice water at the table was excellent. Our server was excellent.
The food was awful. The Corlesimo pasta, which the server said was the house specialty, was way over cooked and inedible. The special risotto was very poorly made and tasteless. This place is a gem that we always visit when we're in town. Thanks, Chef, for indulging me with gnocchi carbonara!

Not because you want to, but because you absolutely need to. The place is always packed with people seemingly celebrating one thing or another while their kid pays little attention to anything but the pasta in front of him. And that kid has the right idea. You come to Trattoria Contadina when you want a big, simple bowl of pasta.
They serve theirs with orange and fig jam and arugula. You know what to do. This is fusilli with chicken, zucchini, sun dried tomatoes, and cream. This pasta is at a comfort food level that could solve getting stood up at prom.
