You will either blot your brush or not, and wet your paper or not. There are four combinations of these approaches. After my demo of the approaches, then I demo a flat wash, which is what a wall is, as the value of color stays the same from top to bottom. My student practices two of these. Then, I demo how to do a graded wash, which is a darker value at the top, gradually becoming light at the bottom of your paper. The student then practices two graded washes.
The last hour of the class, my new student prepares a picture to paint. I demo each step, and the student finishes their first painting before leaving class. They also choose a painting for their next class, which they can draw or trace to have ready for their next class.
This is what I do with a Newbie to give them the foundational understanding of this medium. It helps them understand future class times, as I speak and demo which of the four approaches each student will use, as I teach them how to paint their pictures.
