Our boy is going to 5th grade, and our girl to the 2nd grade. Our daughter is autistic and in the past year has improved dramatically - she can now read near her grade level, and learned to read and speak in English and Spanish! Our son is in TAG and got to travel to 2 robotic competitions, with their group placing in both of them! It's very easy to get involved as a parent, and the teachers keep in constant communication with us via technology or the good old fashion phone call.
PTA is strong as well. We were pleasantly surprised it was named one of the top elementary schools in DFW! Our son got an offer to be transferred to a "magnet" school but we are staying! At first my daughter disliked how everything was old and dirty and broken, that the building was in disrepair, how the teachers complained that there was no money for new things to make it nice, and how there were a lot of roughnecks attending.
For about the first 6 weeks she was scared to go. Her last school was new and in a much, much better neighborhood. So understandably she'd need time to readjust. Most parents in our neighborhood send their kids to private schools because DISD has a reputation for poor schooling and bad financial choices. Parent Review 7y ago. W High Gaston Middle School. I called her math teacher and told her about my daughter not being able to do a simple math problem.
Her answer was that was very normal since alot of her students would not be able to work that simple math problem either and not to worry.. She blamed the students My daughter is headed to 9th grade and she can't even do simple math problems. I can see now why DISD schools are so bad and parents who want their children to succeed and be able to attend universities move out of Dallas County Shame on this school and shame on her math teacher Parent Review 10y ago.
